Since his emergence on the creative jazz and new music scenes in the late 1960s and early '70s, Joe McPhee has been a deeply emotional composer, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist. His 1970 release Black Magic Man was the first album issued on Hat Hut Records, and found him building on the music of artists like John Coltrane and Albert Ayler.
