Suzanne Little & Michele Gould started performing together in Toronto in 1987 as Lava Hay. They first met while working at Now Magazine. Part of the flourishing DIY music scene at the time, they collaborated with other local musicians and held a residency at the Cameron House for a year, honing their live show with various local musicians joining them onstage. In 1989 they recorded an album with the intention of distributing it independently, but it soon came to the attention of Vancouver Indy Label Nettwerk Records.
