California-based singer Anna Danes is lyrical performer known for her sophisticated take on jazz standards. Born in Gdansk, Poland, Danes fled the then-communist country as a child, first to Sweden and finally to Ottawa, Canada. She grew up singing in church, and discovered jazz in her teens. Although music was a passion, Danes initially focused her attention on attending the University of Ottawa on a scholarship for ancient history and archaeology.
