Despite sharing his father's name, Kenny Drew, Jr. was raised by his aunt and grandparents and did not consider Kenny Drew, Sr. to be an influence. He was taught classical music by his mother and grandmother and gigged in clubs as a teenager. He made his recording debut with Charnett Moffett; worked with Stanley Jordan and OTB; and recorded with Eddie Gomez, Sadao Watanabe, and the Mingus Big Band.
