Kentucky Mule started out as a project for singer/songwriter Coleton Tidwell to mash together the country music influences of his childhood with the punk/alternative influences of his later years. Tidwell wanted to create a blend of Americana that could take the format of folk/country storytelling and inject it with energy, tragedy, and inclusiveness. Shortly after deciding on a moniker, Tidwell met guitarist Scott Willis who also shared a vision for creating music that was a little bit outlaw country, but also a little bit subversive and strange.
