Crystal Allen spent years hustling in the music industry as a closeted black woman. Growing up in the Herman Gardens projects in Detroit, she ran away at 15 to attend a performing arts school in LA, then moved on to writing as a hip-hop lyricist/rapper. After returning to Detroit to join the Neo-Funk group Liquid Papuh, she was signed by Westbound Records (Funkadelic, The Ohio Players) under the supervision of The Funky Bass Team (FBT Productions).
