Hailing from the mountains of Virginia, Red Clay River began as a project for Dan Bivins after his former band, Blackjack and the Longhaulers, disbanded. In 2007 RCR toured up and down the East Coast and their songs grew out of standard folk/alt-country to show influences from Nick Cave and Tom Waits. One night while on tour in New York City in 2010, the band's van and gear stolen. Prior to this they had been gaining consistent momentum in the DIY scenes around the East Coast.
