The China Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra was formed in 1996 through the merger of the Shanghai Film Orchestra and the Shanghai Broadcasting Orchestra, and is under the administration of the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture, Radio, Film, and TV. Initially known as the Shanghai Broadcasting Symphony Orchestra, it underwent a name change to the Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra in April 2004 under the direction of Zuohuang Chen.
