Is That Really Your Name? I came alone to Bakersfield, California, from Seoul, Korea, as a 14-year-old exchange student. My host families were sweet; we went to church together on Sundays. Back then, we all adopted English names because nobody could pronounce “Kwang Ryul.” My friends and I chose “Steve” simply because no one else at school had it.
