Igor Lavrov was born in 1945 in Kaluga, Russia, into a family of professional pianists. He gave his first public recital at the age of eight and at the age of ten – a recital with orchestra. In 1970, he graduated from the Gnesin Musical Institute in Moscow where he received classes from Maestro Theodor Gutman (a student of Heinrich Neuhaus). In 1970-1989, he worked as the Head of the Piano Chair at the Ufa Institute of Arts, Russia. In 1985, he received the title of Artist Emeritus of the Bashkir Republic.
