The music of Sequoia is all about conveying the beauty in harsh realities of adult life with both a serious dramatism and a childlike playfulness. Although these two might seem to contradict, the pianist finds a way to combine the two, take off and land in a spot somewhere in between modern classical and jazz piano of the first half of the 20th century. Attentive listeners can find subtle shades of George Gershwin, Duke Ellington and Oscar Peterson , but mostly, Sequoia's music serves as a blank canvas for the listener to project his or her own experiences and imagination on.
