At first, Chris Maier’s A Car That Swims project seems like the polar opposite of the fanciful, instrumental orch-pop he makes under his own name. The four songs on the project’s debut EP Victory Lap are mostly made up of drum machines, synth, and Maier’s distant, submerged voice.
