After early study on the piano and organ, Ballou attended Bennington College, Mills College, and the Juilliard School of Music. She later toured as a pianist with several dance companies and composed ballets for Louise Kloepper and José Limón. As an educator, Ballou developed experimental methods for teaching theory at the college level. The text Creative Explorations of Musical Elements (1971) is among her pedagogical manuscripts.
