Key Players on the Indian Music Market

Saregama

Type: Film Music Record Label

Proudly calling itself India’s first music label, Saregama is now the largest global owner of both sound recording and publishing copyrights of Indian TV and Film music. However, what’s interesting is not the company’s extensive catalog — but the way it was able to monetize it. Since the 2000s, Saregama successfully engaged in experimental physical formats, like USB music cards. In 2017, however, Saregama followed through with Carvaan series — digital music players that come preloaded with “5000 evergreen Hindi songs”. Carvaan became a huge success, to the point where it’s been quoted as the sole reason for the rise of physical sales in India in 2018, making Saregama a huge power on the music market.

Outdustry

Type: Music Services & Consulting Company

Outdustry is hands down the single leading music service company working between the developing markets of India and China with the international music community. With five offices stretching from London and LA to Mumbai and Shanghai, Outdustry offers full circle music services to international acts exploring their opportunities throughout Asia: from publishing to promotion, brand partnerships and A&R. First launched in China in 2006, Outdustry has entered the Indian market late 2018 — and since then the local office has already provided local marketing services to the likes of Major Lazer, Diplo, Lauv, Dillon Francis, and Flume.

Only Much Louder

Type: Promoter

Only Much Louder is one of the leading artists and event management companies in India, gravitating towards the non-film, independent music scene. OML is the force behind the two leading Indian music festivals, EDC India and Bacardi NH7 Weekender — a multi-city annual event, known to draw up to a million people in annual attendance, with artists from Mark Ronson to Steven Wilson to Flying Lotus headlining the show. Launched in 2002, Only Much Louder is now the leading promotion company in India, evaluated at more than $10 million and the owner of one of the most prominent Indian ticketing platforms Paytm Insider.

94.3 RadioOne

Type: Radio

RadioOne network is the only commercial international radio broadcasting in English to all three of India’s biggest cities, Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore. Targeting an “upscale, sophisticated” audience, RadioOne states to have over 6 millions listeners — making it the single best media to reach the internationally-minded audiences in India.

JioSaavn

Type: DSP & Record Label

You can’t really talk about the Indian market without mentioning local streaming services. There are few strong local players alongside international heavyweights of Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music — you can find them in the full list below — but it’s worthwhile to take a closer look at JioSaavn. Besides its impressive 100+ million user counts, JioSaavn also invests heavily into direct artist deals, going further than Spotify ever did. Reportedly, JioSaavn makes up to 10% of its annual revenue through its Artist Originals program, making it a prominent record label as well as the leading DSP in the country.
