Chicago’s Avernus, named after the Italian volcanic crater believed to be the entrance to the underworld in Roman mythology, deliver an emotionally charged and profoundly atmospheric blend of doom, goth, and death metal. The group issued an EP (1995′s Sadness) and the full-length Of the Fallen in 1997 before disbanding in 2009. Reuniting in 2014, they signed with M-Theory Audio and released their long-gestating third long-player, Grievances, in 2023.
