About Phelps Dean Witter
Phelps Dean Witter (b. 1932) was born in Wisconsin but moved shortly after to Los Angeles. There, Mr. Witter began piano studies at an early age with Ethel Leginska, and composition with Halsey Stevens. His family later moved to San Francisco, where he continued his studies with Egon Petri, Alexander Tcherepnin, and Darius Milhaud. At age 16, Mr. Witter was awarded First Prize in the San Francisco Chronicles’s Annual Talent Contest, for his Piano Suite in E-flat.
